The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Bar Association is cautioning against trivializing threats on the Chief Justice and the Judiciary.
Regional President of the Bar, Michael Owusu Gyan, described recent agitations against the judiciary as similar to events that led to the murder of three High Court Judges and a retired military officer on the night of June 30, 1982.
“In those days there were some people in high authority who made noises indicating that they would deal with judges who were giving judgments that they were not pleased with; we all thought that they were idle threats and we sat by. In the end, three honourable judges were murdered in cold blood and we all know that they were killed because of judgments they had given,” he told Nhyira FM at a ceremony to mark this year’s Martyrs’ Day in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
Cat killer
The association also condemned President Mills’ recent reaction to a threat by the National Democratic Congress chairman, Dr. kwabena Adjei that “there are so many ways of killing the cat”, which impressed upon the government to make changes at the judiciary.
Many interpretations were given to the comment that stirred confusion and uncertainty in the country.
But responding to a question during a meeting with editors at the Castle, whether he had any plans of reshuffling the judiciary, President Mills retorted: “do I look like a cat hunter.”
The association said that response was not good enough.
“The president of this nation had the opportunity to speak to the issue [but] he just made light of it and said “do I look like a cat killer?”
“The person may not look like a cat killer but he may in fact be one,” Mr Gyan stressed.
