The Central Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mrs. Rose Bio Atinga, has called on the District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies to assist the Ghana Police Service with logistics to enable it to combat crime in the country.
She said though the government was doing its best in providing the service with the necessary logistics, the assembly could still assist for effective policing.
DCOP Atinga said this when inaugurating a renovated cells at the Swedru District Police Station at a cost of GH¢5,500 (¢55 million).
The renovation involved the provision of two washrooms and the fortification of the roof to prevent jailbreaks.
DOCP Atinga commended the Agona District Assembly for the work done and appealed to the various District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies to emulate the good example.
Mr Ben Mensah, District Chief Executive described the project as the Assembly's contribution to improving conditions at the cells, adding that, it was "inhuman for people in police cells to bath, eat, drink and sleep in the same room".
He said the renovation was in response to a request made by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of the Swedru District Police, Commander Mr B. B. Bakamora.
Mr Mensah hoped that with the renovation, the frequent jailbreaks at the Swedru District Police cells would be a thing of the past.
