A labour consultant Austin Gamey says until employers and labour take advantage of the peaceful mediation processes enshrined within the law, threats of strike will continue to persist.
Mr Gamey stressed the current tension in labour-management relations is largely due to the improper application of the labour law.
He was speaking to Joy Business on the sidelines of a two-day training workshop for managers on the 2003 Labour Act.
He says it is regrettable that despite the noble ideas contained in the act, management and labour continue to wallow in ignorance as far as their responsibilities towards each other are concerned.
“We are still not implementing the act in the spirit in which it was written; we need to re-engineer and get people to appreciate the environment in which the labour act has been produced,” he told Joy FM’s Benard Saibu.
Mr Gamey called for what he referred to as an executive mediation process – mediation at the management level – which he said was essential in resolving issues of unrest at the workplace.
