The Australian High Commission is hosting an Australian Film Festival at the SilverBird Cinema, Accra Mall, 11 - 14 March. A selection of films will be on offer, catering to young and old alike, featuring drama, romance and comedy, and showcasing the diversity of the Australian landscape and people.
The event forms part of a cultural programme which facilitates the screening of Australian films in ‘mini-festivals’ organised by Australia’s overseas missions.
In a press statement issued in Accra, the Australian High Commission said the festival will be free to the public and will see the screenings of eight Australian films namely, Australian Rules, Crackerjack, Unfinished Sky, Swimming Upstream, Ten Canoes, The Magic Pudding, Bootmen and The Black Balloon.
The films have been selected to provide a window into the identity and character of contemporary Australia. The themes include migration, indigenous issues, honour, drama and sport.
High Commissioner William (Billy Williams) said Australia “is very proud that this festival has been brought to Ghana. It’s a wonderful opportunity for Ghanaians to see a unique selection of films that showcase the diversity of Australia’s landscape and people.”
Mr Mark Lazarus, the Producer of the festival’s flagship film, Australian Rules, will visit Ghana to be part of the festival.
Mr Lazarus has an extensive experience in film producing and in drama development. He started in film as a location scout in Troma, Inc’s Sgt Kabukman, NYPD, and his most recent credit is as producer of the Loved Ones, a horror movie completed in 2009 which won the Cadillac People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Midnight Madness section.
Mr Lazarus, in the company of some Ghanaian film stars, appeared on Joy FM’s Cosmopolitan Mix on Wednesday.
The team told host of the show Doreen Andoh what patrons should expect during the four-day festival.
Entry is free, on a first come, first served basis. Tickets must be obtained at the SilverBird counter prior to entry. >
