Tema based steel company, B5 Plus Limited, has organized the May edition of several medical camps and health screening for its workers and residents of Tema where the firm operates.

The exercise was held at the forecourt of the B5 Plus steel factory and was patronized by over 300 people who enjoyed free general medical examination and treatment by seasoned health experts.

There were four medical doctors from the Korle - Bu Teaching Hospital and four health professionals from nearby hospitals who screened beneficiaries for high blood pressure, diabetes, hearing problems, HIV/AIDS and general wellbeing.

Participants were provided with free basic medication and treatment for various ailments after counseling and consultations on-site with few serious cases having referrals to hospitals.

About 15 students of the Head of States Awards (HOSA) group from the Delhi Public School International (DPSI) in Tema were volunteers who assisted the medical team during the event.

B5 Plus Limited is a recipient of the TNG Steel Fabrication Company Award and also the International Europe Award for Quality and Excellent Service.  

The Director of B5 Plus Limited, Mr. Mukesh Thakwani in an interview said the firm has organized series of medical camps across the country since 2006 as part of its corporate social responsibility to improve the health of individuals towards national development.

He said a healthy mind and body is very important to every individual so they extended the screening to the general public to take advantage and improve their health.

“It is an open camp for the masses from anywhere in the community. This is to help people to come out of their general basic health problems. We are committed to helping the needy and uplift the society where we find ourselves to the benefit of the people who live around us”.

The industrialist said the company has drafted plans to expand the Medical Camp Programme and will soon include more interventions for people who have special health conditions.

“We are looking for more advance stage of medical camps. We don’t want to talk much but B5 Plus believes in action and results”.

He added that B5 Plus is committed to social programmes and entreated the general public to have regular medical examinations to maintain a healthy body.

Commenting on the event, Ms Aminatu Ibrahim, a Public Health Nurse from Ningo Health Centre commended the steel company for the screening exercise and advised other corporate institutions to take keen interest in the health of their employees since it has a direct bearing on the productivity level of staff.

Gabriel Nii Amasah Blankson, a Tutor from DPSI and Coordinator for HOSA was delighted about the success of the screening. He applauded the students for their volunteerism spirit which is a core value for HOSA members.

He noted that the event has given students exposure to learn new things beyond the classroom that could help them in their future careers.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to the media showed appreciation to the management of B5 Plus for the good intentions towards the workers and the general public.  

The corporate social responsibility policy of B5 Plus amongst other goals, aims at improving the quality of life of local residents. The company has provided deprived communities with medical facilities, potable water, scholarships and educational resources.

The company recently donated a cheque of GHÈ» 10,000 for the completion of a police station to curb crime in Tema Community 25.
