The Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Command has appealed to the general public to provide credible leads to facilitate the rearrest of Kwaku Yeboah, a 22 year old fugitive armed robbery suspect who escaped from lawful custody last Thursday, while on admission at the Sunyani Regional Hospital.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Christopher Tawiah, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer confirmed the incidence when contacted by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Tuesday in Sunyani.
He said Yeboah was arrested on May 2, 2016 at about 1930 hours in an unconscious state when he had been brutalized by an angry mob after he and an accomplice (also on the run), allegedly attacked and robbed a trader in her shop at gun-point, snatching away a handbag containing GH₵ 2,500.00 at Ohene Djan, a suburb of Abesim, near Sunyani.
ASP Tawiah said the robbers in the course of absconding with the booty on motor bikes were spotted by an 18 year old young man who raised the alarm which attracted neighbours.
After a hot chase by the mob, Yeboah run out of luck and was captured whilst his other accomplice managed to escape. The mob pounced on him and the severe beating rendered him unconscious.
This was when the police responding to an emergency call came in to arrest the suspect.
ASP Tawiah said due to his condition, Yeboah was rushed to Sunyani Regional Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.
When he came round, ASP Tawiah said he was handcuffed and put on a 24 hour Police guard whiles still on admission but managed to escape from the Hospital on Thursday May 5, 2016 at about 2300 hours, leaving the handcuff hanging on the bed.
ASP Tawiah said the Police Constable who was guarding the suspected robber at the Hospital had been given a 10-day ultimatum to find the suspected robber, or would be charged for negligence.
He said the police were sparing no efforts to get the two suspects rearrested.
