Ghana Education Service with support from United Nations Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF) is set to roll out training program for basic school teachers on the dangers of the deadly Ebola virus.

The training will target teachers from both the public and private basic schools across the country.

The exercise is to enable basic school children understand the disease and to avoid an easy spread of the virus in case it is detected in the country.

This was disclosed by the Director for Public Affairs Paul Kofi Krampah in an interview with Joy News.

‘’Ghana Education Service is working closely with UNICEF to develop manuals, posters, leaflet base on the treatment and prevention of Ebola. Besides training exercise will be organise for all teachers across the country on the virus if it happen it is detected in our country’’ he said.

Government earlier this week issued a statement to postpone the re-opening date for the 2014/2015 academic year of all tertiary institutions in the country for two weeks.

Touching on the academic postponement at the tertiary level, he continued by saying, the outcome of the meeting of the inter-ministerial committee on Ebola scheduled on Monday will determine whether the postponement of the 2014/2015 academic of tertiary institution should go beyond two weeks.

The ministry of education has estimated that more ten percent of the country‘s student population is made up of foreigners. And with the Ebola outbreak still rife in the sub-region , education authorities say they are leaving nothing to chance in ensuring that the education sector does not become the conduit for the country’s first reported case.

Ebola has killed more than 1,000 people in West Africa amid fears that it could spread to East Africa.

This is the deadliest outbreak since the disease was discovered in 1976.
