A group of teachers who have not been paid for the past two years have called on the government to come to their aid as they are facing immense hardship in their present circumstances. These are teachers posted by the Ghana Education Service to different parts of the country. The Education Directorates in the various districts have virtually become their home as they go there almost every day to find out when they will be paid. But this has not yielded results. Some of the teachers in the Northern Region have told Joy News their living standards have deteriorated. They said the burden of looking after their large families without any regular income is becoming unbearable. One of the teachers revealed that they are forced to vacate their posts in order to look for some money to survive. But Education Minister Betty Mould Iddrisu has called on the Ghana Education Service and the Controller and Accountant General to fast track the payment of the salaries of these teachers. She said even though majority of these teachers go on study leave without authorization, there are some who have returned from study leave sanctioned by the service and therefore should not be treated in this manner. She said the explanations being given by the GES and the Controller and Accountant General's Department for the delays are untenable and should not continue. The deputy Director of the GES, Mr Stephen Adu has called on the stakeholders to put their heads together to solve the problem, advising that the blame should not be put on the doorsteps of one group. Mr Adu revealed that the service is facing a plethora of problems as it seeks to correct the problem. He said the teachers are also part of the problem as they just vacate their posts without permission and therefore force the hands of the GES to stop their salaries from coming.
