The Boahen Korkor Royal family in Sunyani have said they will continue to seek legal redress in what they have described as the illegal installation of a new queen mother.
They accused Paramount Chief Nana Bosomo Asor Nkrawri of unilaterally picking and installing his favourite candidate as the successor to the late queen-mother, Nana Yaa Nyamaa II, despite a pending case at the court.
On Monday, August 2, 2021, the Chief, at a brief ceremony, announced Nana Akosua Dua Asor Brayie II as the new Paramount Queen mother of the Sunyani Traditional Area.
At a press conference, Joseph Agyabeng Dankwah, speaking on behalf of the charged Boahen Korkor Royal family, said they won’t recognize her as their queen while they take steps to correct the injustice.
According to him, selecting a successor was done without recourse to tradition, the family's knowledge, and support.
Members of the family dressed in black and red attire chanted war songs during the press conference while holding placards.
“She is a fake queen, Boahen Korkor family is made up of three gates – All do not support the installation, Boahen Korkor queen’s stool is not for sale”, were some of the writings on their placards.
The chief’s action, according to them, shows that he does not have any regard for the family he belongs to.
Mr Joseph Agyabeng Dankwah stated that they filed an injunction against an earlier ceremony on June 7, 2021, where he was to announce the successor to the late queen, but it was dismissed.
“An appeal filed against the ruling of the court on July 21, 2021, has not been heard, therefore the ruling of the court to throw out our injunction was not operative”, he stated.
The spokesperson further explained that the family took the matter to court for reasons including, that, “Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawri II set aside the customs and traditions of the family on the choosing and installing of a king/queen when he made his choice without consulting any of the elders of the family”.
“The chief sidelined candidates from the Kwantwiwaa and Nyantakyiwaa gates, on the wrong assumption that the Nana Boahen Korkor queen's stool is the sole preserve of the Akosua Dua lineage”.
He noted that the reign of the chief has remained peacefully, until recently, only because of the magnanimity of the family, and they will legally resist the imposition of his queen on the family.
According to the members of the royal family, if this unilateral and unlawful act by the chief is not stopped, it will serve as a dangerous precedent for succeeding generations of the family.
This, the family insists, will lead to confusion and perpetual litigation in the family.
The Sunyani Traditional Council, over the past 30 years, remains one of the two, in the 49 traditional areas, without litigation. A lot of the challenges that have bedevilled the chieftaincy institution in the country have emanated from the manner of choosing a successor to a vacant stool.
Joseph Agyabeng Dankwah believes if the Sunyani situation had happened elsewhere, it would have resulted in a feud, with the resultant disturbances and possible loss of property and lives.
“We as the Royal Family have always pursued peace, at times, to our cost”, he stressed.
He, however, pointed out that, “when it reaches a point where our rights are being trampled upon, and things are being pushed down our throat, we believe we have the right to react. We do not want to resort to violence, otherwise, we could have got the men to cause trouble during the installation. We are peacefully and patiently pursuing the case at the court and therefore, will not cause any confusion. All we are demanding is justice and fairness”.
The spokesperson also expressed worry about how the actions of the chief have resulted in the discussion of critical family issues in public.
