The 13 Fulani herdsmen murdered at Gushegu in the Northern Region last week have been identified as citizens of Burkina-Faso. The Vice-Consul at the Burkina-Faso Embassy in Ghana, Mr. Zingile Outara Auguste, who identified the bodies, has asked the authorities of the Gushegu District Assembly not to bury them until they get clearance from the Burkina-Faso government. The Fulanis were killed by unidentified gunmen, in an attack in which 10 others were wounded. Alhaji Alhassan Fuseini, District Chief Executive who briefed the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) on the incident on Sunday at Gushegu, said Mali had also indicated its intention to send officials to the area to secure the safety of Malians living there. The DCE said there was calm in the area as no fresh incidents had been reported. The REGSEC members, led by the Regional Minister, Moses Mabengba, were in Gushegu to assess the security situation at first hand and to institute measures to ensure the safety of all residents. Alhaji Fuseini explained that the assembly was providing food and other basic needs to the about 500 Fulanis who have been granted refuge in the assembly hall and police station. The assembly is also supporting all those who sustained injuries during the incident. Mr. Mabengba commended the assembly and other stakeholders for their efforts in bringing the situation under control. He said government regretted the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all residents in the country irrespective of nationality. Mr. Mabengba said that the police would do everything possible to get to the bottom of the matter and to apprehend the culprits as soon as possible. The minister, who met with leaders of both the local and Fulani communities, advised them to co-exist peacefully and desist from acts likely to hamper the development of the area. Mr. Mabengba also cautioned them against taking the law into their own hands warning that the security would deal drastically with anyone or group of people who attempts to cause trouble in the area. He urged people to cultivate the habit of reporting criminal cases to the security agencies, stressing that it was wrong for anyone to attack another person for a perceived crime. Mr. Mabengba later called on the chiefs and people of Saboba to live in peace with non-indigenes saying they should not allow what happened at Gushegu to occur in their area.
