CAF is set to adopt new amendments to the election laws for the body’s presidency after a proposal presented by Algeria football federation president Mohamed Raouraoua was voted in a landslide on Monday during CAF’s congress in Seychelles.
nly six CAF-affiliated football federations voted against the controversial rules that will bar anyone outside the executive committee from contesting the organisation’s presidency. Forty four voted to adopt the amendment that puts an end to the ambitions of Ivory Coast FA former president Jacques Anouma and South Africa's 2010 World Cup chief Danny Jordaan.
Anouma is one of incumbent president Issa Hayatou’s top challenger and critics of the amendment say the Cameroonian is behind the idea to kick the Ivorian out of the race.
Anouma is a member of the FIFA executive committee which qualifies him to be an ex-officio member of Caf's Executive Committee, but without voting rights, although he can participate in all the deliberations.
The new law says “All candidates for election to the presidency of CAF, in addition to necessary competence, must be or have been a member of the Executive Committee of CAF.”
Hayatou has been in charge of the body since 1987 and is most likely to seek another term next March.
