Mr. Isaka Buraima, President of the Coalition for Peace and Development in Buem (COPADIB), has reiterated the call for government to consider a petition by people of Northern Volta for the creation of a region for the area, towards accelerated development.
He expressed regret that since independence, development in the Volta Region has been concentrated in the South, denying people of the Northern sector of equitable distribution of the national cake.
Mr. Buraima was speaking at the annual Buem congress and fundraising, organized by COPADIB, under the theme “Unity and Education for Development”, at Baglo in the Jasikan District of the region.
He said “the people of Northern Volta are calling for rapid realisation of the government’s decentralisation policy and equitable distribution of state resources in line with the Directive Principle of State Policy as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution”.
Mr. Buraima urged the people to unite and support COPADIB for the socio-economic development of the district.
The President of COPADIB appealed to the chiefs of Buem to settle their differences for progress, saying the area could not continue to boast of natural resources without attaining peace.
Mr Henry Ford Kamel, Member of Parliament (MP) for Buem constituency, urged the people to ensure peace and unity for development irrespective of their political and religious backgrounds.
He pledged to work with the chiefs and people towards the development of the district.
Mr Kamal said he has established a scholarship scheme for poor but brilliant children and donated cash and building materials for school building and library project.
The MP appealed to parents, organizations and other stakeholders to contribute to the development of education in the district.
Mr Kamal asked the District Education Unit to intensify its supervision role to enhance teaching and learning.
He appealed to the assembly to motivate teachers, especially, those in remote areas to enable them to give of their best.
