Veteran actress, Grace Nortey has called for equity in the quest for discipline and justice in the movie industry. Her call comes on the heels of bans placed on three movie personalities, Yvonne Nelson, Kofi Adjorlolo and Ekow Smith Asante last year by the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) for various alleged misconducts. The three were later pardoned. Madam Grace Nortey who was speaking in an interview with Myjoyonline.com said unlike her days, the industry had no bodies such as the Ghana Actors Guild and FIPAG who regulate and 'sanitize' the industry. While she was happy that there is discipline now in the industry, that discipline, according to her, must apply to both movie actors/actresses and producers. But she wondered if it will be possible to punish a producer should that producer go wrong. “It’s good that people are being punished, I'm not against that, you can punish an actress but what I'm asking is 'can a producer be punished for an actress the way the actress was punished for the producer?” referring to the ban handed Yvonne Nelson following complaints by producer Abdul Salam. Citing an example, she said “a person like Yvonne Nelson has been punished; she’s been banned for some months, can a producer also be banned for some time because of an actress?” Grace Nortey was of the view that the industry has improved and that there are more producers and actors and actresses in the industry today than it used to be. As much as the industry is growing, she expressed worry at the increasing spate of nudity in movies. “My problem is the nudity [in the industry], that’s the only problem I have because when I ask them, they say they are being paid [well] but the way they expose themselves is my only problem… I'm advising the girls, especially those who are married women,” asking them to turn down scripts that come with nudity. She revealed that she is no longer going to play witchcraft roles, which she was widely known for, in movies. Madam Grace Nortey called for better scripts and stories, adding, “We can have good stories without nudity and witchcraft.” Grace Norety attributed the fall in standards in the industry to producers who take money from prospective actors and actresses, with some even sleeping with producers, before getting roles. “There should be good casting, you have to find people who can fit the roles but you can’t just take a girl to a room and come and give [her a role] or the person is your cousin or a friend and you give him or her a role,” she advised. Grace Nortey is currently starring in The Miser, a television series from the stables of Selassie Ibrahim’s Smarttys Management and Productions which will start airing from August 13 on a number of TV stations.
