The Cape Coast University branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has with immediate effect withdrawn some of its services from the university.
The association took the decision at a meeting on Monday morning.
The president of the Cape Coast University branch of UTAG, Dr Eric Wilmot told Joy News the union has exercised “enough restraint” and has therefore run out of patience over unpaid allowances.
He explained that the rationale behind the decision was “nothing apart from the fact that our book and research allowance for the last academic year has still not been paid”.
According to Dr Eric Wilmot, they were informed by the national president of UTAG on Monday that “everything has been done”, adding that the Controller and Accountant General had given directive to the National Council for Tertiary Education to pay them.
However, information they garnered from the National Council for Tertiary Education indicated that “the account from which this money must be paid was empty”.
In an unrelated development, the Ghana National Association of Teachers is demanding a clear timetable on when and how government intends to pay salary arrears due them since they were migrated onto the Single Spine Salary Structure.
According to GNAT, the arrears date back to January 2010 when the new pay policy took effect.
