The Member of Parliament for Evalue Gwira constituency, Mrs. Catherine Abelema Afeku is calling on women, women groups and activists to rally to the support of Amina Mohammed, the lady behind the ‘Mass Rape’ Saga. Speaking to Asempa News, Mrs. Afeku said Amina Mohammed has gone through some kind of harassment in the hands of the police, and all women irrespective of their political affiliations, need to come out in their numbers to protest against the violation of the young woman’s rights. She said Amina must rather be protected for voicing out what appears to be the abuse of women’s rights especially as it involves rape. Amina is facing prosecution for alleging that armed robbers stormed a Tamale-bound bus and robbed passengers as well as forced the men passengers to have sex with the females. The MP described Amina's predicament as the greatest opportunity for women to rally support for her. She expressed surprise about the unusual silence of the various women’s rights groups and activists who should have come out to speak against the arrest and detention of Amina by the police for over 48 hours. The Evalue Gwira MP who said she is not much concerned about the legal prosecution of the whole saga, says believes Amina needs to be commended for her courage to speak out. Mrs. Afeku called for an extensive education of the populace on their rights and responsibilities and therefore urged women, church leaders and the National Commission for Civic Education in particular, to embark on serious education on human rights. She cited as an example a situation where Amina on her arrest by the police, did not know she had the right to remain silent and needed the assistance of a counsel and that the statement she gave to the police should have been read to her. Mrs. Catherine Afeku therefore called on the media to create national development programmes to help educate the public rather than concentrating largely on sensational issues.
