The paramount Chief of the Ziavi traditional area in the Ho Municipality, Togbega Kwaku Ayim IV, has rejected the impression that the chiefs and people in the Volta Region did not like the President Mills led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. According to Togbega Kwaku Ayim, nobody said that the current government had done nothing for the people in the region. He noted that what the people are expressing concern about is that the level of development in the region did not match the accolade that Volta Region is the World Bank of the ruling party. The Paramount Chief, who was speaking at the closing ceremony of the four days Volta policy fair, held in Ho, said the people of the region would continue to ask for legitimate development of the Volta Region by the government. “If a father promised to buy Christmas items for his children and doesn’t fulfill them, and the father continues promising, the children have the course to complain, and this is exactly what the people in the region are doing,” he stressed. Togbega Kwaku Ayim thanked the government for the policy fair, and stressed the need for the state to ensure that institutions, which are mandated to carry out public education like the Information Service Department lived up to its responsibility, by using its vans to educate the people particularly in the remote areas on issues that affect their development. He gave instances where the only government radio station, the Volta Star Radio (VSR) could no longer reach out to the majority of people in the region due to the poor state of equipment and appealed to the government to, as a matter of urgency, rescue the radio station from the problem that confronted it. “Formerly, the same radio station was heard all over the Volta Region and beyond, but these days, almost half of the people are either denied total service of the radio station or it goes off anyhow, when programmes of interest are going on. Please Information Minister; tell your boss that this is the concerns of the chiefs and people of Volta Region ”. This specific appeal made by the chief to the Deputy Information Minister, Mr. Samuel Ablakwa, compelled the Minister to hurriedly announce that the problems that confronted the Volta Star radio would be addressed within one month, which attracted various comments from the audience. Mr. Ablakwa noted that the policy fair aimed at showcasing development activities executed and programmes and policies in the region had achieved its objectives because over 1, 200 people participated in the four day event, which he noted had cleared doubts about the issue of government not doing anything for the people in the region. The Deputy Information Minister said government had taken notice of the concerns raised by the participants of the policy fair concerning its programmes and policies and assured them that the government would not relent on the development promises made to them. The Volta Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Amenowode maintained that the region had its fair share of development and urged the people to channel all their grievances or concerns through the Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) to be directed to the appropriate quarters for redress.
