Chinese community in Ghana has donated relief items valued at over GH₵1 million to thousands of displaced persons in the Savannah Region following the Gbenyiri conflict that claimed lives and displaced more than 40,000 people.

The items included bags of rice, boxes of tomato paste, blankets, 10,000-liter water tanks, buckets, boxes of mosquito coils, bags of washing powder, cartons of soap, sanitary pads, and cartons of KivoGari Mix.

General Secretary of the Chinese Community in Ghana, Mr Stephen Shun, who handed over the items to the Savannah Regional Minister at Damongo for distribution to the victims, expressed the community’s sympathies to the victims and reaffirmed China’s solidarity with Ghana. 

Mr Shun explained that the support was mobilized through a fundraising drive by Chinese community leaders with guidance from the Ghana-China Friendship Association.

He emphasised that “This humble contribution carries with it the deep concern of the Chinese community. It is not merely material aid; it is a promise that we will stand with you.”

He said the gesture coincided with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ghana and China.

The Savannah Regional Minister, Mr Salisu Be-Awuribe, who received the items, described the gesture as timely and historic, saying China was the first to support the region after the conflict.

He said “It is said in our language that your best friend is determined not at the time of your merrymaking, but at the time of your difficulty. This humble, generous gesture speaks volumes.”

He assured the benefactors that the items would reach the affected communities in the Bole and Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Districts. 

He invited Chinese businesses to explore investment opportunities in the region noting that such collaborations could create a win-win partnership for both Ghana and China.
