City authorities in Kumasi are being asked to take precautionary measures to prevent further accident at the Sofoline Interchange project site. Three children, aged between 11 and 16, over the weekend drowned in the trench at the Kwadaso Underpass section of the project. Some youth of Kwadaso have been registering their anger at the death of the youngsters by removing danger signs put up by the contractor at the site after Saturday’s tragedy. An elder sister of one of the victims condemns the conduct of the youth because she thinks the development could expose more people to danger. Olivia Tiwaah-Sakyi was on an emotional visit to the scene where she lost her only brother. “They (contractors) have killed three strong boys so we don’t want anything to happen again because people have been passing there to the market”, she said. She argued the use of red ribbons as a warning sign at the trench is not enough to serve notice to road users. “They should build something concrete to cover that place because this tape can easily be torn”. Assemblyman for Kwadaso North, Eric Assibey, is equally worried about the destruction of barricades. He is even suspicious more bodies could be trapped in the trench, and wants city authorities to compel the Chinese contractor to drain it to clear any doubts. “I want them to strain every water because we don’t know if different person has been fallen in it… there may be other bodies in it”. A source at the Suntreso District Police Command says officials of the China Geo Engineering Corporation who were arrested on Sunday will face a charge of negligently causing harm.
