The Chief Justice nominee, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, has bemoaned conditions in various law faculties across the country.

According to him, it does not help the practice when people without expertise in the subject are made to head law faculties; this he said is a contributor to the abysmal results of students who sat for the Ghana School of Law School entrance examination this year.

“Before I became a member of the General Legal Council, it mandated me to lead a team to assess the faculties from where we would pick people to do the professional law course, we have compiled our records and the results we found are horrific.”

“For the first time, you would see an acting dean heading a law faculty who has never read any law,” he revealed at his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Monday, December 23.

Justice Anin-Yeboah said the General Legal Council has no intention to block students from entering the Ghana School of Law. He, however, said the mass failure of students was an unfortunate incident which the GLC was taking steps to ensure does not happen again.

“We submitted a budget for 500 students, unfortunately, when the results came out it did appear that there were about 130 that passed. It is only this year that this disaster occurred, bear with us. We are working … and coming up with a more flexible way, but the standards will remain,” he stated.

He also added that if he was given the nod as Chief Justice, he will push for the GLC to publish its reports for the public to know the shocking outcomes of their findings.

“If you clear me I will push for the Ghana Legal Council to publish for the consumption of the general public.”
