The Coalition on the Right to Information says Ghana’s political elites are impeding the passage of the Right to Information (RTI) Bill currently before Parliament because they are uncomfortable with the level of accountability that law would demand of them.
Zachariah Mahama, Northern Regional Coordinator for the Coalition, bemoaned the feet-dragging approach of Parliament towards the bill.
According to him Ghanaians must be given the opportunity to demand accountability from their leaders, something he indicated the bill would ensure.
The Coalition on the Right to Information, Ghana, is a group of civil society organisations and human rights activists working to promote good governance and transparency through the mechanism of a freedom of information law.
The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, who are members of the Coalition, are asking government, Parliament and Ghanaians to dismiss the false impression that RTI law would encourage infringement on individual privacy and tamper with national security.
In a statement the Commonwealth Human Rights initiative said the spread of misconceptions about the bill is regrettable.
