Interior Minister Ambrose Dery has called on personnel of the Immigration Service to collaborate with folks living in communities along the country’s borders to prevent criminals from entering the country.
He asked the Immigration Service personnel to liaise with members of the community to get this done.
“Who are those coming into the community? The foreigners who come in, the [natives] should be able to tell us so we do not have the wrong people who can compromise our security here,” Mr. Dery said.
He was addressing some Immigration Service personnel stationed at the Hamile Border Post in the Upper West Region.
The Minister was on a three-day visit to the region and made a stop at agencies and departments under his Ministry.
Commending the officers, he said he appreciated first-hand the problems they faced in line of their work.
He also said he now understood why some officers who were stationed at the border post were promoted by the Service after they foiled an attempt by some persons to smuggle government subsidized fertiliser.
The only shed at the border post is made from sticks and roof thatch, JoyNews correspondent Rafiq Salam reported.
