The General Secretary of the People’s National Convention has questioned the police handling of the violence in Hohoe and other areas. According to Bernard Mornah, in the attempt to seek peace, the police are ignoring the crucial element of justice which is necessary for lasting peace in the area. He was particularly alarmed by a video footage shown on MultiTv during the Newsfile programme on Saturday in which machete and cudgel wielding youths were seen in the mist of police men strolling the Hohoe Township. “I am totally devastated by what is happening across the country. And it appears we are entering into a state of Armageddon where citizens can just take up [arms] disregard the law and do thing all we can do officialdom is to run round and plead that let there be peace. “And in attempting to get that peace we actually do no get justice,” he said. “…My other disappointment has to go with the security institutions,” he added, citing an example in which the police, instead of hunting for perpetrators in a murder case, rather gave explanations as why the murder took place. “Look at the tape we just watched, the security are walking with people carrying cutlasses, machetes, threatening mayhem. “At the end of the day what we have succeeded in doing is to say let there be peace,” he stated. He condemned pronouncement from the Central Regional Minister Ama Benyiwa Doe as well the Northern Region Minister Moses Mabengba who blamed politicians for the violent acts in their respective regions. Member of Parliament for Adenta Kojo Adu Asare however said there is the need for calm to be maintained before perpetrators can be hunted for. He also criticized the security agencies for not being proactive in their activities but said perpetrators have to be punished. He found it difficult to understand however how the president and the vice will be blamed for not visiting the area.
