A few days ago it was revealed that Diego Costa had completed a medical with Chelsea and it appeared that the move was a near certainty, as the press had been claiming for over a month.
Yesterday it emerged that the Atletico Madrid president has no knowledge of an offer from Chelsea, which is normally a pre-requisite to a medical taking place.
Atletico presdent Enrique Cerezo said of Costa, “If he has an agreement with someone then let him come and tell us.
“If he wants to leave, let him come and deposit his buyout clause which I believe is around 42 or 43 million euros.”
While the chairman doesn’t deny that the deal will probably happen, and that the buy out clause that Chelsea have apparently activated exists, his ignorance of any deal suggests that reports of the deal being near completion may be wide of the mark.
To clarify, sort of, an Atletico club spokesman said that they had “no knowledge of anything that is being said”. This suggests that any medical was not authorised by Atletico, so in all likelyhood probably never happened. If it did, Chelsea would be unlikely to confirm it and thus land themselves in bother over possibly conducting a transfer inappropriately.
It could be however that the Atletico president simply takes a hands off approach to his duties regarding transfers. He may not have been passed the memo to inform him that Chelsea have done all they are contractually obliged to do in order to talk to the player and conduct a medical.
Regardless of this development, it appears to only be a matter of time before Costa joins up with the Blues. The Atletico Madrid president’s lack of awareness of any bid simply means it has not arrived yet, but it is certainly coming soon.
