The Copa America Centenario has announced a number of rule changes hours ahead of the tournament's opening game, including alterations to the yellow card policy and the number of substitutions teams can use in the final.
Under the new rules, which are based on new 2016-17 Laws of the Game from the International Football Association Board (IFAB), yellow cards will accumulate through the quarterfinal stage of the competition, which will allow for players to be suspended for the semifinal. Card accumulation will be reset once the quarters are completed. In previous editions, they were reset after the group stage.
Additionally, teams will get an extra substitution should the final reach extra time.
Tie games will go straight to penalties after 90 minutes in the knockout stages except for the final, where two 15-minute periods of extra-time will be played before heading to penalty kicks if necessary.
The competition, with written approval from FIFA, announced a fourth substitution will now be permitted in that extra-time period.
The announcement of the rule changes comes just days after the competition's organisers had confirmed the rules for the 2016 edition would not change from past tournaments.
