Senior editors engaged in discussions with the Constitution Review Commission (CRC) over its work have raised issues with land acquisition and use by the state.
The media practitioners on day two of their interactions with the CRC said there should be clear timelines for the return of such lands for which government found no longer useful for the purpose for which it was originally acquired.
According to them, this should reduce controversies and possible conflicts arising from such agitations.
But a member of the CRC, Gabriel Pwamang siad the request was not practical.
He said governments take land “in perpetuity and the main idea is that government …will continue to exist, that government plans with the future (in mind).
Mr Pwamang added however that the state can only give up lands if it was no longer needed for the purposes for which it acquired.
“Then it becomes clear that the land is no longer needed for the public purpose and in that case the original owners can petition (or) go to court to vindicate their rights.”
