The Executive Director of the Lands Commission, Dr Odame Larbi, has assured the public that the bulk of records at the Commission is safe notwithstanding the extensive damage caused by a fire outbreak Thursday dawn.
He told Joy News’ Israel Laryea that even though they were yet to assess the extent of damage, most of the affected documents are those being processed.
Documents on state lands, plans records, and completed and filed documents are all intact, he assured.
“The bulk of the land record is intact and everybody who has got a completed document with the Commission is safe, none of those documents got burnt.”
Dr Larbi said the fire which started from the accounts section of the Public and Vested Lands Management Division, also affected one of the registries, the Survey and Mapping conference room and the director's office as well as the Library of Survey and Mapping Division – all under one block.
“The damage is quite extensive; almost every paper and equipment in those rooms are all gone,” he explained.
Meanwhile the Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Mike Hammah, is promising the automation of document processing at the Lands Commission.
The Lands Commission has also directed an enquiry into the cause of the fire.
The committee of enquiry will have representations from the Ghana National Fire Service, the army, police, the BNI and Lands Commission.
