Ghana’s first world boxing title holder, David Kotey, popularly called D.K. Poison, has poured out his bitter sentiments about the country’s betrayal of his efforts and trust since 1976.
He has however vowed never to encourage any of his children to get involved in the sport of boxing.
Speaking on Hitz FM’s Taxi Driver show with Blakk Rasta, Wednesday, he said he is patiently waiting to die as there is nothing more to live for considering the neglect and disrespect pioneer sports personnel receive from authorities who should know better, and expressed great regret for helping the country in her time of food crisis.
According to him, he single-handedly lent $45,000.00 of his ‘DK. Poison vrs Fuku Yama’ bout purse as requested by I.K. Acheampong led government to buy tinned fish to help alleviate the terrible hunger facing the country in 1976 with the notion of paying him back.
He said as a young pioneer and a citizen, he never hesitated to release the money as demanded of him by the Kwame Nkrumah standards of “Ghana first”.
“…They needed foreign currency in order to buy the fish which they did not have. So the president sent me a telex to release the said money with an assurance that the government would pay me back in full, but thirty years have passed and my money had not been paid by any government no matter how many petitions I wrote,” he stressed.
After all is said and done, the one-time world boxing featherweight champion urged the government to fulfill their part of any promise made on time. He also expressed gratitude over a gift of an estate at Teshie-Nungua given to him by the head of state in the wake of winning the world title.
