The Deputy Programmes Manager of the National TB Control Programme has urged all Ghanaians to do something in their lifetime to prevent the spread of TB.
Dr. Nii Nortey Hanson Nortey said one must at the very least speak to another person about the dangers of TB and practice cough etiquette to prevent the spread of the disease.
He was speaking on Joy FM’s Ultimate Health programme, Tuesday.
He said Tuberculosis is a chronic disease that affects the organs especially, the lungs, and causes damage to the ribs if not detected early and treated intensively.
He said human beings and animals alike are prone to the disease, warning, if not well treated, can be suicidal.
According to him the disease, just like HIV/AIDS, is transferable from one person to another, but through shouting, singing, spitting around without observing the necessary hygienic measures.
Dr. Nortey noted that the symptoms of the disease are severe coughing which in some cases may involve blood clots, heart burns, rib pains and so on.
He said though many people may acquire the disease, most of them will not actually show severe signs of the disease adding, some people may be cured while others may die out of it.
He has therefore urged all persons with symptoms of the disease to go for screening and intensive treatment to avoid re-infection since it is difficult treating a re-infected person.
