Former Deputy minister for Interior, Nana Obiri Boahen, says continuously holding prisoners granted Presidential amnesty amounts to showing the office of the President gross disrespect. Nearly 900 prisoners who were granted Amnesty by President Mahama three weeks ago are still languishing in various prisons around the country. The prisoners were granted amnesty as part of the Republic Day celebrations. Joy News sources reveal there is growing agitation among beneficiaries of the 2013 Republic Day pardon, due to delays in releasing them. The beneficiaries include 10 seriously ill prisoners and three others aged 70 years and above and recommended by the Regional Medical Board to be released on health grounds. Nana Obiri Boahen said the inmates should sue the prison authorities for human rights abuses when they finally get out. He said if the pardoned convicts seek redress through the Court, it will strengthen Ghana's democratic principles and serve as a lesson to other institutions in the country. He said the directive of the President must be respected.
