The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has admonished teachers got to exploit students by reserving and shifting “good” lessons to extra classes, to enable them to make personal financial gains.
“I expect teachers to teach students adequately during class hours rather than doing so during extra classes. They can do their part by inculcating all the values of quality education to their students, while at the same time imparting academic knowledge to them,” he said.
The minister was speaking last Saturday, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary and 3rd speech and prize-giving day celebration of the Amasaman Senior High Technical School at Amasaman (AMASTECH).
The function was on the theme: “Quality Education with Discipline, the Bedrock of National Development.”
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo said the theme for the celebration was appropriate because quality education involved paying attention not only to details and hard work but also to discipline and moral excellence.
“Academic excellence without moral discipline cannot bring about success,” he pointed out.
The minister also admonished parents, and the churches to instill into their wards, the need to respect the elderly, have fellow feeling and eschew selfishness.
He advised the students to desist from lustful desires like homosexuality, lesbianism, drug abuse, occultism, stealing, and lying.
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo later presented a cheque for GH¢20,000, for the construction of two mechanised boreholes for the school to alleviate the school's water problems.
He also donated three sets of jerseys and footballs to the school and another cheque for GH¢1,500 to robe the school choir.
The headmistress of AMASTECH, Mrs. Esther Ofori-Adjei earlier in her speech, paid glowing tribute to the founding fathers of the school and mentioned Mr. Isaac Ohemeng Gyebi, the first headmaster for his pioneering role.
She said the school which started in 1991 with 50 students, now had a total population of 1,117.
Mrs. Ofori-Adjei said even though the school was located in a rural area and admitted students with aggregates above 25 their academic performance had been excellent.
She cited the 2010/2011 academic year where all the 236 candidates of the school presented for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, had 100 per cent.
Mrs. Ofori-Adjei, however, expressed concern about the activities of encroachers, who had taken about two-thirds of the school land.
She, therefore, appealed to the government to construct a Dining Hall or canteen for the school to stop students from loitering about in search of food to buy during class hours.
Dignitaries who graced the 20th anniversary celebrations included the Greater Accra Regional Minister Nii Armah Ashiettey and the Ga West Municipal Chief Executive, Ebenezer Nii Armah Tackie.
