Gender Activist and Executive Director of the Ark Foundation, Angela Dwamena Aboagye says no attention is paid to the Domestic, Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), a unit that takes care of the vulnerable in the society.
According to her, like many of the gender-based institutions, DOVVSU has been marginalized as it has not been treated like a specialized unit under a formulated policy.
The Gender activist was reacting to Joy News reports of assault meted out on a-thirty-six year old mother of three by the Tamale Metro head of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), Chief Inspector Lawrence Adombire.
She complained of little funds provided to the unit with its officers transferred anyhow together with cases of insensitivity demonstrated by a number of its officers.
"We are concerned because DOVVSU has not got the resources to train them (Officers) in handling gender-based issues effectively", she intimated.
Angela Dwamena Aboagye therefore called for a consistent pattern of training for specialised units such as DOVVSU to enhance the handling of gender-based violence cases.
Meanwhile, police in the Northern regional capital, Tamale have initiated disciplinary measures against the Tamale Metro head of DOVVSU following complaints of abuse leveled against him by a thirty-six year old mother.
Speaking to Joy News' Manasseh Azure Awuni, the Northern Regional Coordinator of DOVVSU, ASP Emmanuel Holotu noted that the police will be determining the veracity or otherwise of the allegation leveled against the Tamale Metro head of DOVVSU, Chief Inspector Lawrence Adombire.
According to the Regional Coordinator of DOVVSU, the police have laid down procedures to follow regarding such issues and that, what is going on currently is in line with the service regulation.
The alleged victim, who prefers to remain anonymous, went to the Tamale DOVVSU to report her husband, who threw her and her children out of the house only to be assaulted by Adombire.
She told JOY NEWS she is experiencing a hearing impairment after she was slapped.
"He [Chief Inspector Lawrence Adombire] just started slapping me....he slapped me [and I could not sleep because my ear hurts]. He slapped me three times", the alleged victim narrated.
Meanwhile, Chief Inspector Lawrence Adombire has denied slapping the woman, but admitted shouting at her because she was not cooperating.
