The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) registered 2,924 vehicles in the Upper West Region in 2007, generating revenue of 56,465.51 Ghana cedis.It registered 2,445 vehicles as at September, 2008 and the figure is expected to reach 3,300 vehicles by the end of the year.Mrs Mabel Sagoe, Acting chief Executive of DVLA, said this at the inauguration of a 43,000 Ghana-cedi Office complex for the DVLA in Wa.She said DVLA was in the process of licensing private garages to undertake vehicle testing to help improve road safety and also make testing centres accessible to motorists throughout the country.Mrs Sagoe said the DVLA was encouraging vehicle owners and riders of motorcycles to visit its offices to undertake vehicle and motorcycle inspection for road worthiness in order to promote safety on the roads.
Madam Asibi Winifred Dy-Yakah, the Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, appealed to management of the DVLA to ensure that all the necessary equipment required for the effective functioning of the facility was provided.She said the government had focused on the restructuring of the DVLA to make it more responsive to public demands and urged its management to live up to the task.Madam Dy-Yakah said the accident situation in the region had been minimal but expressed concern about accidents involving motorists during the visits of political leaders, especially presidential candidates, to the region.Source: GNA
