The Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan has denied accusations that the EC was engaged in an illegality by supervising the election of parliamentary candidates for the yet-to-be created constituencies by the ruling NDC.
He insisted that as far as the EC was concerned, there were neither candidates nor constituencies yet, for the 2012 elections.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the NDC of committing an illegality by going ahead to elect parliamentary candidates for the yet-to-be legalized constituencies.
A Constitutional Instrument (CI) to give legal effect to the creation of 45 new constituencies has been placed before Parliament and has yet to mature but the NDC has been electing candidates for the constituencies which the NPP says is illegal.
Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu faults the EC for supporting the illegality.
“If the holding of those primaries is based on the new constituencies covered by the LI which has not come into fruition yet, then holding the primaries and the supervision of it by the EC will be an illegality,” he maintained.
But, Dr. Afari Gyan said he was unaware of any constitutional provision or electoral law mandating or barring the EC from supervising parliamentary primaries.
He said when and how political parties elect their candidates was not of any concern to him.
