The Electoral Commission says media houses must be circumspect with publishing election station results ahead of official declaration by the EC during the November 7 polls.
A Deputy Commissioner of the EC, Georgina Opoku Amankwaa, told Citi FM the caution has become important in order to prevent conflicting results by the EC and media houses.
She said conflicting results could cause voters to doubt the credibility of the electoral process.
“It may be that you get access to some results and after calculating, it comes out that the Electoral Commission, which has access to all the results has something different results from yours; then people who might have heard you already would think that the figures might have been doctored by the Electoral Commission,” she was quoted by Citifmonline.com to have said.
“We are therefore calling on the media not to declare the election results before the Electoral Commission.”
In past elections some media houses have been quick to announce provisional results even before the EC announces the certified results.
In some cases, some political parties have also gone out of their way to declare themselves winners before the official results.
