The Public Utility Workers Union say their members have come under attack from the public following the directive by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission to the Electricity Company of Ghana over its billing anomalies.

The PURC last month instructed the ECG to suspend the software used for billing its post paid customers, following complaints of astronomical bills they receive.

Consumers say for months now, they are paying twice as much as they paid for the same amount of electricity consumed and that is unacceptable.

The phenomenon has angered some members of the consuming public who have taken their anger on staff of ECG as well as members of the utility workers union. 

The workers say since the directive to suspend the software, their members have come under attack from the public.

The General Secretary of the Public Utility Workers Union Michael Nyantakyi told Joy News the situation is threatening.

According to him, some of his colleagues have now become targets of insult and attacks across the country.

He cited instances in Kade where members of the unions were chased with machetes by members of the public.

The situation at Adjei Kojo in Tema, is no different, he maintains.

He said members of the union are assaulted and accused of stealing power from the members of the public.

He wants the situation to be addressed as soon as practicable.

"The situation is affecting our people; people want to work and not to be assaulted," he stated.
