The Electricity Company of Ghana has named one of its contractors, Gidi Klo, as the man who masterminded the theft of 86 transformers at the ECG’s Central Stores in Tema.
The revelation was made at a court hearing in Accra, Saturday.
Emmanuel Owari Boateng, star witness for the company and head of security at ECG told the court during cross examination that Gidi Klo had given the transformers to two of his accomplices who are also ECG officials to sell.
Joy News' Kwetey Nartey who was in court reported that the company could not find the trail of documentation covering the transportation of the 86 transformers
As a convention, the movements of all transformers are documented for future reference but nothing of that sort was done to the 86 transformers.
After investigation it emerged the transformers had been stolen.
Owari Boateng told the court that the company picked up information that two of its staff, a driver by name Eric Darko and an engineer they only named as Perfect, were selling the transformers and were looking for buyers.
The company then feigned interest by forming a team to buy the transformers.
The witness who was part of the 'mystery' buyers said they met with the two suspects and agreed to buy the transformers.
Instead of buying, they alerted the police who then picked up the suspects.
Upon interrogation, the two suspects named Gidi Klo as the prime suspect in the matter.
When police went to the Tema residence of Gidi Klo, two of the transformers were seen, Nartey reported the witness as saying.
The suspects are however tightlipped on the whereabouts of the remaining transformers.
The case has been adjourned to May 9, 2015.
