A faulty electric pole located at Kejetia, the commercial hub of Kumasi, on Thursday morning killed a woman whose name was not immediately known.The woman, believed to be in her late 30s, according to sources, was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for medical attention but died shortly after arrival.Sources said the deceased got electrocuted and instantly fell on the ground comatose when she went past the faulty electric pole which is among electric poles situated along the road in question.Witnesses told the paper that earlier in the morning, a man, suspected to be in his early 40s, also got electrocuted at the same spot when he went past the defective pole.The man, the paper gathered, was fortunate to escape death as he responded favourably to treatment when he was conveyed to the hospital for medical attention.Reports are that during the rush hours of the previous day, the same dysfunctional electric pole gave people who went past it severe electric shocks.DAILY GUIDE discovered that some good Samaritans, after the malfunctioned pole had claimed the precious life and given many deadly electric shocks, hoisted a red flag around the place to give signal to people to avoid using that arena.But it was observed that the erection of the red flag at the zone failed to serve it purpose as people continued to go past the damaged pole.This, the paper gathered, attracted the attention of management of Freiko Limited, managers of the Kumasi Kejetia Terminal, who quickly detailed some of their security men to ward people off the area to prevent further fatalities.Information reaching the paper indicated that the ‘killer’ pole developed fault some days ago but authorities failed to rectify the problem, though they were duly notified.DAILY GUIDE is reliably informed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) engaged each other in a ‘war’ as to who should repair the faulty pole.While the Electricity Company contended that it was the duty of KMA to fix the damaged pole, the KMA on the other hand argued strongly that electricity and its related issues lie squarely with the electricity company; therefore it was their job to refurbish the out-of-order pole.In spite of the expensive blame-game, the ECG on Thursday afternoon speedily dispatched men to Kejetia to fix up the dysfunctional pole.This was not until some radio stations in the metropolis had made the news of the tragic death an issue in their discussion programmes where panelists chastised both the ECG and KMA for shirking their responsibility.When DAILY GUIDE paid another visit to the place in the afternoon of Thursday, the hoisted red flag had been removed, while the detailed security men had left.Unlike in the morning when people were barred from using the area, people this time around were seen moving past the arena of the pole freely without caution.Source: Daily Guide
