Mr. Ebenezer Adjei Osekre, Chief Executive of Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly, on Saturday appealed to the electorate to eschew confusion and violence to ensure the success of Election 2008. He said “we need to learn from the recent US elections and ensure peaceful elections on December 7. We cannot afford to gamble with our cherished democratic dispensation and the peace being enjoyed in this country." Mr. Osekre was speaking after a peace walk that was organised by the assembly for all parliamentary candidates and their supporters in the municipality on Saturday. The activity that started from Baatsona and ended at the office of the Nungua Traditional Authority, brought together supporters of the various political parties. They carried placards some of which read ” Do not be partial in your work, Electoral Commission”, “In unity lies strength,” Peace, our legacy” and “Politics is about good ideas for national development”. Mr. Osekre said Ghana needed to preserve its good reputation in peace building and democratic values. He said “Peace and soccer are the two most important things that have made this country great world wide and we need to keep it up in order not to tarnish our hard earned reputation”. Mr. Osekre appealed to the electorate not to interfere in the work of election officials on polling day, to ensure peaceful and transparent elections. He advised voters to leave the polling stations after casting their ballot and allow the polling agents of their respective parties to monitor activities instead of taking the law into their own hands and causing mayhem”. Chief Superintendent Elizabeth Dassah, Accra East Divisional Police Commander, said that the police would ensure law and order at all polling stations. She said the security agents would not intimidate any body on 7 December and urged the electorate to be disciplined and refrain from engaging in electoral malpractices and violence. Representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Convention People’s Party (CPP), and New Patriotic Party (NPP) promised to maintain peace in the municipality before, during and after the elections.
