The Energy Commission is set to impose sanctions on a British firm responsible for importing 57 containers of banned refrigerators into the country.
A seven day ultimatum issued by the Commission for the firm, EnviroCom to re-export the refrigerators to the United Kingdom (UK) expired yesterday.
Speaking to JoyNews Friday, the Executive Director of the Commission, Dr. Alfred Ahenkra said the refrigerators will have to be destroyed locally and the company surcharged if it is established that they have failed to meet the terms of ultimatum given.
"If as at yesterday, they have not shipped them back then the next line of action is to take them away from the port and send them to a dismantling facility and dismantle them and then send them a bill", the Executive Director intimated.
Dr. Ahenkra further accused the UK company of collecting used and discarded appliances from the UK, recycle and sell them to people.
The Executive Director noted that the Commission suspected the UK firm would bring in the used appliances into the country because an official of the company had earlier on approached the Energy Commission and proposed to establish their business in the country.
Dr. Ahenkra, however said, the Commission was not in favour of the firm's line of business since it will lead to abuse and dumping.
The UK firm was therefore identified for shipping items into the country, when they went to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to get clearance on their items.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ahenkra confirmed that some 2,000 refrigerators have been impounded at the Takoradi Port, this he attributed to importers' acknowledgement of the Commission's strict adherence to the laws at the Tema Port.
The action of the importers, he noted, is a deliberate attempt to evade monitoring at the Ports.
