Diagnosis and treatment of complex lung and throat conditions in children could soon see improvement at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The hospital is receiving support from an entrepreneur, Evangelist Kwaku Ennin, to acquire modern equipment like endoscopy and Bronchoscopy machines.
Pediatric Intensivist, Dr. John Adabie Appiah, says non-availability of such equipment over the years compels doctors to improvise in diagnosing pediatric lung-related cases.
Intervention by Evangelist Ennin who is Chief Executive Officer of Zeal Environmental Technologies Limited, is welcome relief.
Zeal provides environmental waste management services for the oil and gas industry, in addition to operating the Takoradi Port recession facility in the management of ship -generated waste.
Evangelist Ennin has presented endoscopy equipment at the cost of $20,000, with a promise to deliver a Bronchoscopy at similar cost later.
Bronchoscopy is considered an effective procedure for removing foreign objects stuck and causing blockade in the airway.
It is highly recommended for the treatment of swelling in the upper airway and vocal cords of patients with throat burns caused by drinking caustic soda.
Officials at the Pediatric Directorate at the Komfo Anokye Hospital are overwhelmed by the increasing number of children who drink caustic soda, which damages their throats and lungs.
Dr. Adabie Appiah, a Pediatric Intensivist, says doctors stretch themselves beyond limit to support patients in the absence of Bronchoscopy.
“We need this equipment [bronchoscope] to go through the passage that takes air to the individual lung lobe. Without that [Bronchoscope], we can’t. We have situations when they [kids] come in, they have lung collapse, kids who have aspirated; may be drunk ingested caustic soda. Sometimes we induce them to vomit and when they vomit, some of the vomitus goes down the air passage and they get stuck there. You need that also to remove the vomitus”. Dr. Adabie Appiah said.
Evangelist Ennin and his environmental management company earlier this year donated GH50, 000 to support the treatment of over 50 victims of caustic soda domestic accident.
He has followed up with an additional donation of Endoscopy equipment at a cost of $20,000 to KATH.
He tells Nhyira Fm the gesture is his widow’s mite in helping to alleviate the plight of the hospital by addressing the equipment needs of the facility.
“God has blessed me, even with good health, so I need to support such an interventions like what we are doing today because health challenges are very key, especially, with pediatric cases. So what I am doing is just supporting the medical systems in the country to be able to manage some of these challenges confronting medical personnel to be able to manage cases they are confronted with more efficiently”. Mr Ennin revealed.
Meanwhile, Evangelist Ennin is encouraging Ghanaians to complement government’s effort at supporting health facilities across the country with equipment and cash.
