The New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Spokesperson on Employment and Jobs, Kofi Tonto, has accused some state institutions of using bail conditions as punitive measures rather than ensuring suspects receive due process in accordance with Ghana's democratic principles.
Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show on Thursday, July 16, Mr Tonto alleged that some institutions were using court-imposed bail conditions to infringe on the rights of citizens instead of safeguarding justice.
He made the remarks in the wake of the arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
According to Mr Tonto, accountability should never come at the expense of fairness and due process.
"Is that how democracy is supposed to be? A kangaroo court? A banana republic?" he questioned.
He also accused the Acting Deputy Executive Director of EOCO, Raymond Archer, of using the Constitution and the EOCO Act to advance what he described as personal interests and decisions.
Mr Tonto's comments follow the arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the Kotoka International Airport.
The former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD) is being investigated over the alleged misappropriation of approximately GH¢55 million and other alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities during his tenure at the institution.
The NPP spokesperson also questioned whether the media was adequately performing its role as a watchdog by ensuring fairness and accountability in the public interest.
"The media held us accountable when we were in power," he said.
He urged journalists and state institutions to uphold the principles of fairness, transparency and justice, stressing that accountability must be applied equally and without political bias.
EOCO has not publicly responded to Mr Tonto's allegations. Investigations into the case involving Dennis Miracles Aboagye remain ongoing.
