The Esports Association Ghana (EAG) has officially launched the Ghana Esports League (GEL), the country’s first structured national esports league, designed to develop, rank, and reward elite gamers across Ghana.
Set to kick off with a Pre-Season Tournament in August 2025, the league will feature EA SPORTS FC25 and eFootball 25 as the debut competitive titles.
The initiative is a major step in formalising the local esports industry and creating sustainable opportunities for players, coaches, content creators, and other stakeholders.
In a statement marking the launch, Mr Kwesi Hayford, President of Esports Association Ghana, said the GEL represented a new era for competitive gaming in the country.
“The Ghana Esports League marks a new era for competitive gaming in Ghana. This league isn't just about gaming; it's about providing structure, recognition, and professional pathways for our players, coaches, content creators, and industry stakeholders. We are building an ecosystem that can thrive locally and compete globally,” he said.
The Pre-Season phase will involve both online and offline matchups featuring top esports teams nationwide.

These matches will influence national rankings, provide media exposure, and determine seeding for the main league.
Ghana’s most decorated esports player, Wondhakid, also welcomed the initiative:
“This is what we've been waiting for. The Ghana Esports League is a game-changer. As a player, I've seen the hunger and talent in this country—we just needed the right platform. GEL is going to push us to new heights and show the world what Ghanaian gamers are made of.”
The league is being developed in collaboration with regional and industry partners and is open to corporate sponsorship, media collaboration, and technical support from institutions interested in promoting esports and digital innovation in Ghana.
Teams, players, and media outlets interested in participating or partnering with GEL are encouraged to contact the organisers via gel@ghanaesports.com.
