Extradition processes have begun for British fugitive David McDermott who was arrested in Accra last Friday.
The 42-year-old is wanted for his role in a conspiracy to import £71 million worth of cocaine into the UK in 2013.
UK High Commissioner Jon Benjamin says his country is awaiting the issuance of the extradition warrant.
“The process has already started but obviously with every judicial process it takes time and we’ll see how it plays out,” said Jon Benjamin.
He adds that should Mr McDermott need legal representation, the UK High Commission would assist him get one.
David McDermott is the second UK fugitive to be arrested in Ghana this year.
Jon Benjamin says the collaboration between Ghana and British security officials to arrest UK fugitives who escape to Ghana has been extremely helpful.
David McDermott is married to the step daughter of Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr. Henry Kofi Wampah.
On Sunday, Mr Wampah issued a statement indicating he was unaware of the fugitive status of David McDermott.
