The clash between the two feuding sects of Muslims in Tamale - Tijaniya and the Al-Sunnah - was nearly renewed last night. The Tijaniya and the Al-Sunnah sects had engaged in violent confrontation at the Northern Star Radio, over the varied interpretation of some verses in the Qur'an on Sunday. One of the sects is said to have attacked members of the rival faction (Al-Sunnah), who were observing their Ishaq prayer around 7pm at Afajura mosque at Sakasaka, a suburb of Tamale. But what nearly triggered the clash is not yet known. An eyewitness says some unidentified men on motorbikes fired gunshots around the Afajura mosque.According to the eyewitness' account, the gunmen on the motorbikes threatened to come back and set the mosque ablaze. The people in the area after the prayer also mobilised themselves, blocked the road and mounted a search for members of the rival sect. The security personnel comprising soldiers and police officers upon tip-off quickly moved to the scene and averted what could have turned into a bloody clash. There has since been a heavy security presence at the violent scene to restore calm and peace in area.Meanwhile, Regional Minister, Moses Magbengba has called for a REGSEC meeting following Sunday’s clash. The Tijaniya and Alsuna are reported to have engaged in a violent confrontation over some misunderstanding at the North Star Radio station and ZAA.Mr. Magbengba tells Joy News the meeting will pore over recordings of the incident as captured on radio.
