A deputy Finance and Economic Planning Minister has hit back at critics downplaying government’s economic achievement.
Fifi Kwetey told Joy News the role of government is to create a congenial environment for businesses to thrive and that it is well on track.
He was reacting to the Convention People’s Party which accused government of trumpeting achievements of its macro-economic stability whilst turning a blind eye to the hardships many Ghanaians are enduring.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the CPP Shadow Finance Minister Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom said there is a wide gap between the macro-economic stability being bandied about by government spokespersons and the harsh economic realities.
He charged government to tackle with a superior sense of urgency, issues about health care, youth unemployment, housing etc.
But in a reaction Fifi Kwetey stated that no meaningful achievement can be made without stable macro-economic indices.
He argued for a country to develop, its political and economic stability must be guaranteed and Ghana under President John Mills can boast of the two.
He wondered why Dr. Nduom whose knowledge in economic issues cannot be doubted will seek to underestimate the stable macro-economic achievement chalked by the President John Mills administration.
He said it is the duty of government to create a congenial atmosphere for people to take advantage of the opportunities, adding, it is not the place of government to put monies into people’s pockets.
Fifi Kwetey stated further that major countries of the world including Britain are feeling the pinch of the global economic turbulence, insisting Ghana is doing much better under difficult circumstances.
He said the year 2009-10 was the dust hour for the dawn and 2011-12 is the beginning of the dawn for the government.
