The Greater Accra branch of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) says the Finance Ministry has failed to fulfill a promise to pay salary arrears owed teachers by December 2015.
Speaking on the AM Show on Joy News, Multi TV, Chairman of the group, Rene Senyo Kwamikorkor, accused the Finance ministry of being negligent in the discharge of its duties and has regarded an agreement to have the arrears paid.
“The problem is coming from the Ministry Of Finance. There was a committee set up and the Chief Director of the Ministry of finance was head of the committee.
“His duty was to ensure the issue is resolved by end of last year. The excuse given was that when you are recruited for a job, you are paid for the first three months after which they will verify whether you are a real being or a ghost,” he revealed.
He also said some teachers have not been paid for three years, a situation he described as heartbreaking.
The association also says the non-payment of transfer grants is a source of worry for them.
Mr Kwamikorkor told AM Show host, Mamavi Owusu Aboagye, that “we are of the view that our employers have the right to transfer us to anywhere they feel our services our needed.
“They are also compelled by our agreement that when you transfer a teacher, you are supposed to give him or her transfer grants to transport their properties to the new place.”
The teachers also say their vehicle maintenance fees have not been paid for three years making it impossible for them to go about their normal duties.
Rene Senyo Kwamikorkor also said the union does not take delight in subjecting innocent pupils to days unending without teaching them.
