Personnel from the Ghana Fire Service have deployed seven fire tenders to help salvage the Mallam market which has been engulfed by raging fire.
Joy News’ Beatrice Adu who was at the scene told the Super Morning Show the entire market is up in flames.
She said market women, who can’t save their wares due to the severity of the fire, were wailing uncontrollably.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started around 6am in one of the stores and quickly spread to other stores.
Scores of market women lost all their wares in the fire and there was wailing everywhere, Myjoyonline.com's David Andoh reported.
With tears rolling down her rotund cheeks freely, Alima Dramani, forced a few words that summed up her frustration.
She had been a Kayayee (head porter) for over a year and managed to save her daily earnings to buy a sewing machine with which she started apprenticeship, hoping to eke out a living one day as a seamstress.
Alima woke up Monday morning and the machine she bought with over a year's toil has been turned into ashes by raging fire.
With the fate that has befallen her, Alima can only go back to the chaotic central business district of Accra as a Kayayee to start all over again.
