A standoff ensued Friday morning between the Tema Police and the residents of Tema New Town over a parcel of land originally owned by the Tema Naval Base.
The incident led to the burning of a Toyoto Tacoma with Registration No. 3539 - 09 belonging to a private contractor, and five offices of the Naval Base.
Eleven people have arrested in connection with the disturbance to assist in further investigations.
The private contractor, Inova Holdings, had been contracted by the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) to clear illegal structures erected by encroachers, but the fishermen resisted the demolition and attacked the contractor, Mr Ben Kenneth Ntumi and his equipment.
Adom FM’s Kweku Kumi reports that the police were so overwhelmed that they had to call for reinforcement.
He said the fire service managed to salvage only two of the five offices set ablaze. The other two were completely burnt.
