The Ghana Maritime Authority has appealed to fishermen in the country to adhere to maritime regulations and stop fishing close to the oil rigs and the supply vessels operating on the Jubilee field.
The appeal was contained in a set of recommendations made following investigations into a recent incident on the Jubilee fields in which a fishing canoe collided with a supply vessel discharging pipes onto the oil rig “Erike Rhode” on the Jubilee fields
According to International Maritime laws fishing canoes are supposed to stay 500 meters away from oil rigs and other oil structures on the high seas but fisher folks especially those in the western region have consistently violated these and other regulations because the fish are attracted to the lights on the rig.
Four fishermen have died in 2 accidents recorded since oil exploration and drilling started in Ghana.
