The Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) of the Western Regional Police Command, has arrested five persons at different locations for dealing in narcotics.
The operation, which was conducted at dawn on Friday, was part of the command’s quest to control the supply and use of drugs in the region.
Briefing journalists on Friday, the Regional Commander, (DCOP) Ransford Moses Ninson, said upon a tip-off, the DLEU team went to Akpandue near Aiyinease in the Ellembelle district and arrested one Kwasi Emmanuel in his house.
A search in his room, he said, revealed seven bales containing 185 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp covered with tubers of yam.
“Upon interrogation, Emmanuel said he brought the stuff from Tain in the Brong-Ahafo Region,” DCOP Ninson stated.
From Akpandue, the police commander said, the unit moved to Alusinu where they arrested Ezuah Anatsi; 63, and his son, Ibrahim Abdulai; 34, both natives of Awudua in the Western Region.
He said that when the police searched their rooms, they uncovered 35 wrappers and a quantity of dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp.
The suspects, he said, admitted ownership of the exhibits.
At Nyamekorgyina, Mary Kwame; 29, from Awiabo, and Lucy Bara; 42, all natives of Nandon, and Emmanuel Prah; 48, from Elmina, were arrested in their room for possessing three parcels and a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, DCOP Ninson said.
He said that the regional police command would continue to arrest criminals who deal in narcotic drugs which endanger the lives of the youth, adding, “We want to make the Region a safe place to live in.”
The commander said the police were on course and will sometimes conduct random checks for narcotics.
He said, however, that the police could not at all times search all vehicles and would, therefore, rely on the public to track down criminals and dealers in narcotics.
“We need information from the public and we will not disclose their identity,” DCOP Ninson assured.
